Welcome visitors to the Advanced Placement Incentive Program Cohort 2 (APIP2). The staff and I are pleased that you are visiting our webpage.
On September 26, 2008, the U. S. Department of Education announced the award of 20 grants totaling $13,268,091 to increase the participation rates of low-income and underrepresented students in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), one of this year's AP Incentive Grant Program recipients, was awarded the second highest award in the nation to conduct the "AP Alliance Project".
Our APIP2 represents six high schools (Madison, Serra, Hoover, Kearny, Point Loma and Mission Bay) as well as select feeder middle schools (Montgomery, CPMA, Farb, Pacific Beach, Wilson, Clark, Correria, and Taft). We will partner with universities, colleges, community agencies and businesses to ensure that our low-income and under represented students have access to high quality AP courses and support systems that promote their educational success.
As educators and advocates, we have much to be proud of; yet we also realize that there is still much work ahead. "More students from varied backgrounds are accomplishing their AP goals, but we can't afford to believe equity has been achieved until the demographics of successful AP participation and performance are identical to the demographics of the overall student population."
Research shows that high schools, which provide AP/IB courses, raise academic standards, and participating students are more prepared and successful in pursuing four-year university degrees.
Again, thank you for your interest in the Advanced Placement Incentive Program Cohort 2. Should you have any additional questions please feel free to contact us at 858-505-9578.
Sincerely,
Donald R. Mitchell
